The short answer: Marvel’s Echo ultimately premiered on January 9, 2024 — not January 10 as first announced — with all five episodes dropping at once on Disney+ and Hulu. It also became Marvel Studios’ first TV-MA series and the first title under the Marvel Spotlight banner.
The Echo Trailer Promised a Much Grittier Marvel Show
When Marvel released the first Echo trailer in November 2023, the message was not subtle.
This was not “everybody trades quips while a glowing hole opens in the sky” Marvel.
The trailer leaned into violence, Wilson Fisk being Wilson Fisk, and Maya Lopez having an exceptionally bad series of family reunions.
Marvel described the five-episode story as a grounded drama following Maya, played by Alaqua Cox, as Fisk’s criminal empire catches up with her and forces her home to confront her family and past.
Echo Did Not Actually Premiere on January 10
The original announcement said January 10, 2024.
Then Disney moved the launch up.
All five episodes began streaming at 6 p.m. PT on January 9, 2024, simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.
So the old headline was technically accurate when it was written and wrong by the time people could actually watch the show.
Streaming has somehow made television schedules less permanent than restaurant chalkboards.
Why Was Echo Different From Other Marvel Shows?
Echo collected several Marvel firsts in one very short series.
- It was the first Marvel Studios series released all at once instead of week by week.
- It was the first Marvel Studios series released simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.
- It was Marvel Studios’ first TV-MA series.
- It launched the Marvel Spotlight banner for more grounded, character-driven stories that did not require a doctorate in MCU continuity.
That last one may have been the most radical concept of all: watch five episodes without first studying 14 movies, three post-credit scenes and a diagram.
Was Echo Basically a Daredevil Preview?
The trailer absolutely encouraged that conversation because Vincent D’Onofrio returned as Kingpin and the tone looked closer to Marvel’s older Netflix-era street-level shows.
But the old article went too far in treating fan hopes for Daredevil: Born Again as though they were part of the factual story.
Echo was its own five-episode series centered on Maya Lopez. Kingpin mattered. Daredevil connections mattered. That still did not make the show an extended commercial for some future series.
What Happened to the Hulu Window?
Disney’s launch materials said Echo would also be available on Hulu through April 9, 2024.
That limited Hulu window was part of what made the release unusual at the time. Disney+ was the long-term streaming home; Hulu was part of the simultaneous launch experiment.
The important thing now is not to tell readers to “mark January 10 on the calendar” two and a half years after Maya already punched everybody involved.
